On 2 November 2016 the Adoption Act Queensland 2009 was amended by the passing of the Adoption and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016.
This has been a long awaited update to the Queensland legislation, which effectively provides for greater ability of parties to adopt children in Queensland.
One of the long sought, and finally available, actions of this amended legislation is that single people, people undergoing fertility treatment, and same sex couples can now register an expression of interest in adopting a child within Queensland. This was available in some states in Australia previously, but not Queensland. This will greatly increase the number of prospective adoptive parents that are available, and can only assist the authorities to ensure the best available parents have access to the children seeking adoption.
The new legislation also streamlines the step-parent adoption process, which we hope to be very effective, given the previously very lengthy, costly and difficult processes that were in place.
This is a very exciting time for adoption, with much interest we will be watching to see whether the changes effect all that is sought in reality. It is with some enthusiasm that there is further review of this due to occur in another 5 years.
