Neal Wood
Hi, I’m Neal.
I’m an experienced family lawyer working in BWB’s Toowoomba office.
Since my admission to the legal profession in 2008, I’ve worked exclusively as a family lawyer within specialist family law firms in Brisbane and Toowoomba.
What stands out to me after more than a decade of experience is just how difficult it can be for someone going through separation to take that first step and reach out to a professional they have never met before. To then ask me to be involved in what is a deeply personal matter for them, when I am nothing more than a stranger at that point, is incredibly brave. When a person reaches out for that help, it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. Too many family lawyers either do not care or do not care enough. The difference for me is that I do.
Combining my experience in top-tier law firms in Brisbane and applying that to the regional setting that is Toowoomba where I have lived and worked since 2014 means I can offer my clients insight into the family law world that only a more senior practitioner such as myself can provide. I am particularly skilled at resolving complex property matters as well as preparing and advising on financial agreements. My experience also includes acting for parents where there are issues involving relocation, severe communication or safety concerns between parents, and drug and alcohol misuse.
Why family law?
While the pathways to resolution and the law may be universal in their application, each and every relationship is unique and so is each person’s experience of separation. From the very first point of contact that I have with a client, through to the resolution of their matter and beyond, I get incredible satisfaction from knowing that I have done everything I can to impart a sense of hope, optimism, and finality to what is, for the most part, an inherently difficult and uncertain time. Whether I’m aiding a client to negotiate and settle their matter in an amicable way, or representing them through court proceedings, I’m ultimately driven by the clear and definitive impact that my role has on a person’s life.
How would you describe your approach?
My advice is robust, practical, realistic, and as unique as each client I support. My priority as your family lawyer is to protect your interests both now and into the future, and so anything I can do to avoid unnecessary conflict and litigation – which is both emotionally and financially draining – will be discussed with you as we work together towards resolution. I have seen the damage that mud-slinging in a family law matter can have, and so my focus remains on ensuring a swift and amicable resolution is achieved wherever possible, and to ensure your goals and behaviours are aligned with that approach.
