Sophia De Klerk

Sophia De Klerk

Hello, I'm Sophia.

I'm a Brisbane Family Lawyer at Best Wilson Buckley, and I believe that when life feels uncertain, having clear, practical legal advice can make all the difference.

Family law matters are rarely straightforward, and I understand that clients often come to us during some of the most challenging periods of their lives. My approach is direct, pragmatic and compassionate. I believe in providing honest advice, explaining the options available and helping clients make informed decisions about their future.

For me, being a good family lawyer isn't about telling clients what they want to hear. It's about giving them the information, guidance and support they need to move forward with confidence.

Background

My legal career began in 2020, and since then, I've gained valuable experience working across different law firms, developing my knowledge and passion for family law along the way.

I started in legal administration before progressing into law clerk and paralegal roles, giving me a strong understanding of the legal process from multiple perspectives. In August 2023, I was admitted as a solicitor, marking an important milestone in my career.

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to explore different areas of law, but I found myself consistently drawn to family law. It was the area that most closely aligned with my personal values, interests and the kind of difference I wanted to make through my work.

Having progressed through various roles within the legal profession, I've developed a practical understanding of what clients need throughout the legal process, particularly the importance of clear communication, preparation and thoughtful guidance.

Why Family Law?

My passion for family law comes from a very personal place.

Through my own life experiences, I developed an early understanding of just how deeply family law matters can affect individuals and their families. Those experiences have stayed with me and continue to shape the way I approach my work today.

I understand that behind every legal matter is a person navigating change, uncertainty and often a great deal of emotion. That's why I believe it's important to balance compassion and understanding with honest, practical advice.

What I find most rewarding about family law is the opportunity to make a difficult process feel a little more manageable. Every client has a different story, and every matter presents its own challenges. I genuinely enjoy working with people, understanding their circumstances and helping them find a way forward.

My Approach

I would describe my approach as direct, pragmatic and solutions-focused.

Clients have often told me that they appreciate my straightforward communication style. I believe that when someone's life has been turned upside down, the last thing they need is uncertainty or advice that has been softened to avoid a difficult conversation.

Instead, I focus on providing clear, realistic guidance so my clients understand where they stand, what their options are and what they can reasonably expect.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is being able to take complex legal issues and translate them into something that makes sense. The law can feel overwhelming, particularly when emotions are involved, and I see it as my responsibility to help clients understand the process without unnecessary legal jargon.

I'm naturally drawn to problem-solving, and I enjoy finding practical solutions that reflect each client's individual circumstances and goals.

Above all, I want my clients to feel that they have someone in their corner who will listen, be upfront with them and help them navigate their matter with clarity and confidence.
